I will introduce the sectional matrix, which encode the Hilbert functions of successive hyperplane sections of the given ideal, and of generic initial ideals. I will describe several results depending on the extremal behaviour of the sectional matrices, that characterizes some geometrical behaviour of algebraic varieties. The sectional matrix and the generic initial ideal are powerful tool, we will see how they are usefull to study properties of free hyperplane arrengements.
