2021年12月17日、北海道大学大学院理学院 優秀研究奨励賞の授与式が執り行われました。優秀研究奨励賞とは、日本学術振興会特別研究員制度DC1もしくはDC2に大学院理学院の担当教員を受け入れ研究者として申請し、採択予定年度に理学院博士後期課程に在籍を予定するものの中から、より一層の研究のステップアップが期待できると評価される学生を表彰する制度です。今年度は数学専攻6名、物性物理学専攻2名、宇宙理学専攻1名、自然史科学専攻7名の計17名が本賞を受賞しました。
会場となったのは90年の歴史がある理学部本館大会議室です。式に出席した12名の大学院生には、永井隆哉理学院長が英語で祝辞を述べた後、一人一人に賞状と記念品が手渡されました。
永井理学院長からの祝辞
「Today, I am very pleased to hold this award ceremony to present you the outstanding research encouragement award of the Graduate School of Science, which had been postponed for a long time. This award is given to graduate students in the doctoral course who applied for the JSPS Fellowship, and who are expected not only to step up their research activities but also to get their PhD within 3 years of the standard doctoral course period.
（本日は、ずっと延期になっていた理学院優秀研究奨励賞の授与式を挙行することができて大変うれしく思います。昨年は授賞式を行うことができず、2年ぶりの開催となります。この賞は、日本学術振興会特別研究員制度に申請し、より一層の研究のステップアップを期待するとともに、博士課程の標準修了期間である3年以内に学位をとることを期待する学生を表彰するものです。）
Eight months have already passed since you started your research in the doctoral course. I understand your research environment may have been a lot different from what you had imagined due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, you know very well that you should not compromise your research achievement because of COVID-19.
（皆さんが博士課程での研究を始めて、すでに約8か月が過ぎました。コロナ禍にあって、皆さんの研究環境は想像していたものと大きく違っていることだと思います。しかしながら、コロナ禍だからと言って、博士課程の研究を妥協していいということではないことは皆さんよくわかっていると思います。）
From my experience, I would say the doctoral course will be the best time in your research life because you can focus 100% on your research every day. Such a blessed time is not something you will often have in the future. Please keep it up and do your best as always. We, the faculty and staff members of the Graduate School of Science, are happy to support you as much as possible. Congratulations on winning this award.
