ソハイル・ピントさんが第６回ヨーロッパ藻類学会議でManton Prizeを受賞
2015年8月23日～28日にロンドンで開催された「第6回ヨーロッパ藻類学会議 6th European Phycological Congress」において、大学院生（D2）のSohail Keegan Pintoさん（多様性生物学講座Ⅱ・堀口研究室）がManton Prize（学生の最優秀口頭発表賞）を受賞しました。講演タイトルは「Diversity and phylogeny of the dinoflagellate genus Testudodinium (Dinophyceae). by Sohail Keegan Pinto, Ryuta Terada and Takeo Horiguchi」です。
ヨーロッパ藻類学会議は4年に1回開催される大会で、ヨーロッパの藻類学者が中心ですがそれ以外の地域からも多数の参加があります。今回はヨーロッパ藻類学会議とイギリス藻類学会との共催で開催されました。本賞はイギリス藻類学会が故Irene Manton博士を記念して設けられたもので、学生による口頭発表のうち最も優れたものに授与されます。この賞の選考に当たってはまず要旨によって予備審査が行われ10名の候補者が選ばれます。10名の候補者はそれぞれ自分の研究に関する短いビデオを作成し、大会のサイトにアップロードして自分の研究をアピールします（http://www.epc6.org/Manton_videos）。本番では、大会3日目に設けられたManton sessionにおいて10名の候補者がそれぞれ発表し、審査がおこなわれます。ピントさんはそこで見事優勝しました。
ピントさんの発表内容は、2012年に堀口らが設立した新属の渦鞭毛藻Testudodiniumに間して種多様性と属内の進化過程を明らかにしたものです。設立当初3種のみを含んでいたこの属はピントさんの研究により少なくとも7種が新たに認識され、また属内の一部の系統では扁平な細胞を支えるためと考えられる支柱様構造（新奇構造）を進化させたことなどを明らかにしました。分類学的研究と属内の系統関係だけでなく新奇構造の発見も含め形質進化も解明した点が高く評価されたものと考えられます。ピントさん、おめでとう。そして今後のさらなる飛躍を期待しています。

I was stunned and delighted to find out that I had won the Manton Prize at the 6th European Phycological Congress. To be placed first out of ten of the best entries was a great honour indeed. I had the unique opportunity to attend this conference and to participate in this competition, and I am pleased to have made the most of it. The entire experience has reinvigorated me, and I shall pursue my studies and research activities with a renewed zeal. I am especially grateful to Professor Takeo Horiguchi, without whose help and support I would not have been able to participate in the conference; Professor Ryuta Terada, our co-author; and Professor Kazuhiro Kogame and my colleagues at the Laboratory of Biodiversity 2 for all their suggestions which helped me improve the presentation into its final, award-winning form.
