Message from the Dean of the Graduate School of Science: Preventing the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) 【September 30】

On Thursday September 30th, the State of Emergency is lifted in Hokkaido. Accordingly, Hokkaido University will lower its Business Continuity Plan (BCP) from Alert Level 3 (Restriction-High) to Alert Level 2 (Restriction-Medium) from the beginning of the second term, Friday October 1st.

In response to this announcement, for the time being, the Graduate School of Science has decided to implement the following measures. Students at the Graduate School of Science are kindly requested to continue to practice “new normal” school life.

1. Traveling and Outings

  • Please continue to keep your travel outside Sapporo to a minimum. If you have to travel for business, job hunting, home visiting etc., please be careful and take all measures for infection prevention. In addition, be sure to inform your supervisor about your traveling destination and period.

2. Visiting University Campus

  • Please avoid unnecessarily visit to campus.
  • Please look after your health, and if you have cold-like symptoms such as a fever, please do not come to campus.
  • Do not use the Science Buildings for any purpose except for attending classes and research activities.
  • Buildings #2 and #5 in the School of Science will continue to be locked and the other buildings are open. When you need to enter building #2 or #5, please unlock the doors with your student ID card.
  • Please be sure to wear a mask when you enter the buildings and when you conduct activities (including when moving around) on the premises.
  • Wash your hands, disinfect your hands, and observe coughing manners inside the buildings.
  • Please avoid Three Cs (Closed spaces, Crowded places, Close-contact settings) all the time during both classes and while resting inside the buildings.
  • Please stay in the Science Buildings for as short a time as possible.
  • Please refrain from group meals.

【Request】

The main route of transmission is through droplets. Please refrain from activities that cause transmission of droplets such as drinking parties, karaoke, eating at friends’ houses, and so on. Please be aware of the actions that cause a risk of infection such as conversation without a mask, speaking loudly even with a mask, and so on.

3. Classes (lectures, exercises, experiments, and practical training) under
the BCP Alert Level 2

  • Face-to-face lectures may be carried out for course subjects that are able to avoid “Three Cs” and can take sufficient infection prevention measures in classrooms. Please follow the instructions from the person in charge in your department, laboratory, course/lecture or class.
  • When participating in face-to-face classes, be sure to wear a mask and take thorough measures to prevent the spread of infection, such as disinfecting your hands and washing your hands frequently.
  • Participating in online classes using on-campus Wi-Fi is prohibited. The School of Science loans Mobile Wi-Fi Routers to students who do not have internet access at home. Please consult with the Academic Affairs Section (rkyo1(at)sci.hokudai.ac.jp).
  • The notices of classes, study and campus life will be posted on the Rigaku Joho System. Please check the Rigaku Joho System regularly.

4. About Research Activities

  • For research activities, please carefully consider how to prevent the spread of infection, communicate well with your supervisor, and make sure that you stay for as short a time as possible with the minimum number of people required to carry out your research safely.
  • For outdoor research activities, communicate with your supervisor, and carefully evaluate the need for visiting infected areas. Also, avoid situations where you will be in close contact with people, such as when traveling, and give due consideration to infection prevention measures.

5. Inquiries about Study and Campus Life

  • The Academic Affairs Division in the Graduate School of Science is closed on Level 2. If you have any questions about study or procedures, please contact the Graduate School Educational Affairs Section by email (r-gakuin(at)sci.hokudai.ac.jp). However, if there is anything urgent, please do not hesitate to come to the office.

6.Mental Care Office

  • The Faculty of Science has a Mental Care Office. Currently, it only offers email
    or telephone consultations. A clinical psychologist counselor is there to
    help you. If you have any concerns and/or anxiety, please feel free to make an
    appointment by e-mail (nayami(at)sci.hokudai.ac.jp). For more information,

7.Contact information in case you are diagnosed with COVID-19

  • If you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or are suspected of being infected, or if you have been designated as a close contact, you must call the university to report the details (Do not come to the University).
